Brendan Bell (born March 31, 1983) is a former Canadian ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the New York Rangers during the 2011-2012 season. Drafted 65th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Bell was a standout in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), playing in four seasons with the Ottawa 67s and serving as their captain in the final year. In 2001, he won the OHL Championship with the 67s, and two years later he was named OHL Defenseman of the Year and the recipient of the Max Kaminsky Trophy for Most Outstanding Defenseman of the Year. He recorded 53 points in 55 games that season, adding 27 points in 23 playoff games.
His NHL run didn’t go as smoothly as his days in the OHL, as he spent the first two years solely in the American Hockey League (AHL) with Toronto’s minor-league affiliate. In 2005-06, Bell made his debut in the NHL, playing one game but ultimately spending the remainder of the year in the AHL. After registering one goal and four assists in 31 games the following year, Bell was traded to the Arizona Coyotes for forward Yanic Perreault. He finished the year playing 14 games and adding two assists to his total, but spent the following year in the AHL for the most part.
Bell signed a one-year deal with the Ottawa Senators for the 2008-09 season and played a career-high 53 games, recording 21 points. The following season, he signed with the St. Louis Blues to play for the minor-league affiliate and was traded midway through the year to the Columbus Blue Jackets. He spent 2010-11 between Russia and Switzerland before returning to North America for one final season in the NHL, playing in one game for the Rangers. His career dwindled after that point, playing time in Sweden, Switzerland, one last run in the AHL, and finally his last year in Italy.
