Colby Armstrong (born November 23, 1982) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens during the 2012-13 season. Drafted 21st overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Armstrong spent the first three years of his eight-year NHL career with the Penguins, establishing himself as a versatile two-way forward to could play up and down the lineup. He registered 10 goals or more in the first five years of his playing career, including the 2007-08 season split between the Penguins and Atlanta Thrashers, in which he was traded. Armstrong played two seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs and one with the Canadiens.
Following his 37-game stint in Montreal, Armstrong left the NHL to pursue his career in Sweden. He played in 37 games with the Växjö Lakers of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), registering 19 points (12 goals, 7 assists) in 37 games. Armstrong announced his retirement from the sport at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season in Sweden. He would pursue a career in broadcasting, appearing as an analyst for Sportsnet from 2014 to 2016, and has since been an analyst for the Penguins’ AT&T post-game broadcast.
Internationally, Armstrong has represented Team Canada at the 2007 and 2009 Ice Hockey World Championships, winning a gold medal and a silver medal respectively. In the 2007 tournament, Armstrong was responsible for the game-winning goal for Team Canada, as the team beat Finland in the tournament’s final game, 4-2.
