Errol Thompson (born May 28, 1950) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL split with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings during the 1980-81 season. Drafted 22nd overall in the 1970 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Thompson became an NHL regular in Toronto during the 1972-73 season when he’d put up 32 points in 68 games. Spending five full seasons with the Maple Leafs, he registered career high numbers in goals, assists, and points during the 1975-76 season, hitting 80 points in 75 games and also registered his only 40-goal season (43). During his sixth year in Toronto, the team was destined to miss the playoffs leading to his trade to the Red Wings along with two 1st-round picks and one 2nd-round pick for Dan Maloney and a 2nd-round pick.

Thompson spent three seasons with the Red Wings, recording one 20-goal and one 30-goal season during his tenure. Ahead of the 1980-81 season, he was named the captain of the team, however it was short-lived due to his eventual trade to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Gary McAdam after 39 games. Thompson’s career concluded at the end of the season, finishing with 40 points in 73 games but failing to make the playoffs for a third consecutive year.
