Steve Smith (April 30, 1963) is a retired Scottish ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the Calgary Flames during the 2000-01 season. Drafted 111th overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, Smith spent his first two seasons in the NHL split between the Oilers and their American Hockey League affiliate Nova Scotia Oilers, however he earned his spot in Edmonton during the 1985-86 season when he played in 55 games. He became one of the staples on the Oilers blue line for the next five seasons, helping the team capture three Stanley Cups and registering two 55-point seasons, including a career-high 13-goal season. While his name is engraved three times on the Stanley Cup, right next to the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, he’ll perhaps be known forever for his infamous own goal that led to the Flames eliminating the Oilers in the 1986 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Ahead of the 1991-92 season, Smith was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for defenseman Dave Manson and a third-round pick in 1992. In his first year with the new team, he registered a career-high 57 points in 78 games, adding 214 penalty minutes. His dominance on a pairing with Hall of Famer Chris Chelios provided the Blackhawks with one of the best defensive pairings of the 1990s. Unfortunately, injuries plagued the final four years of his time in Chicago, leading to him not playing at all during the 1997-98 year and instead serving the Flames as an assistant coach. Smith played in three more seasons with the Flames, serving as their captain during the 1999-2000 season, before announcing his retirement at the conclusion of the next year.
