Guest post by Eldon MacDonald
This is the third of four posts highlighting the top 120 prospects for this year’s entry draft in June in Newark, New Jersey – the NHL 2013 Draft Rankings: War Room April Edition.
Gangs of New Jersey
Here are some of the major groupings for round two (31 to 60):
1. My Personal Favourites Crowd: As I reported last month, these are my personal favourites for round 2. So, how did they do?
- Marko Dano, HC Slovan Bratislava: No impact so far in the KHL playoffs.
- Samuel Morin, Rimouski: The biggest riser in round 2 as Samuel had a great playoff round even though his team lost the series. He played the point on the power play and almost looked Charaesque in his performance. The upside on this guy is tremendous – 6’7, good skater, nasty in front of the net, makes good passes, can play the power play. Yes, he is still raw but most likely this guy will go in the 1st round. I haven’t put him first round just yet myself as I want to see how he does at the U18’s in Sochi, Russia.
- Jordan Subban, Belleville: Belleville keeps winning and Subban continues to play good defense; he is plus six in seven games. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that his goalie (brother, Malcolm) has been pretty good too with a .938 save percentage.
2. The Netminders Crowd: Also, as previously reported, I have not included any goalies in round one due to the glut of goalies in the NHL this year and the amount of young goalies in the pipelines. So how did the goalie group do?
- Zach Fucale, Halifax: Amazing 6g .067 .961 – it doesn’t get much better!
- Eric Comrie, Tri-Cities: Injured but not forgotten.
- Tristan Jarry, Edmonton: Still a backup so didn’t get into any games behind Laurent Broissoit.
- Spencer Martin, Mississauga: Terrible; injured and struggled – 2g 8.01 .604. Hopefully, all the king’s men and Hockey Canada will be able to put Spencer back together again as he is Team Canada’s top goaltending hope for the U18’s.
3. The I Could Go in the 1st Crowd: These are the players that I identified last month as the most likely to be promoted to round one if they turned it up just a notch. Unfortunately, none did. Three of them are most likely headed for Sochi, Russia to play in the U18s World Championship – Klimchuck and Dickinson with Team Canada and Muller with Team Switzerland. Bowey is still in the WHL playoffs and while he has played decently, he hasn’t raised his performance to demand that he be ranked in round one just yet.
- Madison Bowey, Kelowna
- Mirco Muller, Everett
- Morgan Klimchuck, Regina
- Jason Dickinson, Guelph
4. The Newbies: These players were ranked in round 3 last month. Both of these players are headed to Sochi and were simply too big and too good to be left in round three.
- Dillon Harrington, Swift Current
- Micheal McCarron, USA NDP U18
5. The Relegated: These players were relegated to round three in my rankings. Both of these players have the size and skills to be in round two but have not delivered the results expected and also need to increase their compete levels.
- HudsonFasching, USA NDP U18
- Ryan Kujawinski, Kingston
Historic Success Rate
The historic success rate for players ranked 30 to 45 is around 33% while rankings 46 to 60 only carry a 24% success rate.
