Ed Chynoweth (December 14, 1941 – April 22, 2008) was the franchise owner and president of the Western Hockey League’s Kootenay Ice from 1995 up until his passing in 2008, at the age of 66. He became the first president of the WHL in 1972, a position he held until his departure in 1995 to join Kootenay. He is also responsible for the formation of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), bringing all three major Canadian leagues together. In 1995, Chynoweth formed the expansion Winnipeg Ice, which eventually rebranded twice —first as the Edmonton Ice and then as the currently-known Kootenay Ice— and remained with the team for 13 years.
He sadly passed away at the age of 66 due to kidney cancer, and is survived by his wife and two sons, Dean and Jeff Chynoweth . Dean went on to play in the NHL and eventually coach the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League (AHL) while Jeff became the general manager of the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen. A member of the class of 2000 in the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, Chynoweth was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009 as a builder.
