James Black (born August 15, 1969) is a former Canadian ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the Washington Capitals during the 2000-2001 season. Drafted 94th overall by the Hartford Whalers in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, Black made his NHL debut in 1989, playing in one game for Hartford and spending the remainder of the year in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Binghamton Whalers. In three seasons, Black became a successful player at the AHL level, amassing 87 goals and 208 points in 206 games.
Black left Hartford in 1992 to join the Minnesota North Stars but played in just ten games, spending the remainder of the year with the Kalamazoo Wings of the International Hockey League (IHL). Following the relocation to Dallas in 1993, Black appeared in 13 games and picking up two goals and five points. He was traded to the Buffalo Sabres during the season and was relegated to the Rochester Americans after just two games. The following season, he spent the full year in the IHL, registering 73 points in 78 games with the Las Vegas Thunder.
Striving to earn a full-time role in the NHL, Black signed with the Chicago Blackhawks for the 1995-96 season and after one year with their AHL affiliate, he got his chance. He appeared in 116 NHL games in three seasons with the Blackhawks, amassing 22 goals and 38 points. His production was enough to get interest from the Capitals, where he spent the following three years of his hockey career. Black set career highs in goals, assists and points during the 1997-98 season where he picked up 16 goals and 30 points in 76 games. In 2002, he took his journey overseas, playing three more seasons with stops in Switzerland, Germany, and Italy.
