John W. Henry (born September 13, 1949) is the current owner of the Boston Red Sox. Or if you live overseas, you may have heard of him as the owner of Liverpool in the English Premier League. Now Henry’s Fenway Sports Group controls the Pittsburgh Penguins as well.
The principal owner, Henry accumulated his wealth trading commodities and eventually formed John W. Henry & Company, a wealth management firm. He’s joined in the ownership of Fenway Sports Group by chairman Tom Werner, president Michael Gordon, and additional investors, such as LeBron James and MLB executive Larry Lucchino.
Penguins Under Ownership
In Dec. 2021, Henry and Fenway Sports Group officially purchased the franchise from Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle, though the two former owners will stay on as part of the overall ownership group.
Under the guidance of Fenway Sports Group, the Penguins will attempt to capitalize on the latter years of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin’s careers. The two life-long Penguins won three Stanley Cups together under the previous ownership and would surely like to celebrate a few more championships as their respective careers wind down.
