Washington Capitals March Prospect Report

With the Washington Capitals season coming to an abrupt conclusion, The Hockey Writers continues to give Caps’ fans a look at the team’s prospects. Both college and junior seasons have ended, with the playoffs going on right now and the AHL season coming to a close as well. This is the final edition of the regular season monthly prospect reviews, but THW will dish out a pre-draft top ten Capitals prospects piece.

Andre Burakovsky: Washington’s first round selection from the 2013 draft has made big strides in his first season in North America for the Erie Otters. He recently won player of the month for March and totaled 87 points in 57 games this season in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He’ll have an opportunity to make the Capitals out of training camp next season.

Madison Bowey: Washington’s second round pick from last year’s NHL entry draft has made tremendous strides that enabled him to sign his entry level deal with the Capitals. He’s still playing for Kelowna in the WHL playoffs and set a record for most goals by a Rockets’ defenseman in the regular season with 20. His goal is to make the Capitals out of training camp next season.

NCAA

Riley Barber: Washington’s sixth round draft selection from 2012 recently announced that he’s returning to Miami University of Ohio for his junior season. He’ll look to continue to improve on his over a point per game piece at the NCAA level prior to turning pro.

Caleb Herbert: Herbert finished his career at Minnesota University of Duluth and signed a two year entry level contract with the Capitals. He’s with the AHL’s Hershey Bears right now and has produced in the few games he’s appeared in to this point.

AHL

Philipp Grubauer: In his second season in the AHL, Grubauer has had a mix of ups and downs this season. It’s unclear if he’s Hershey’s starting playoff goalie with the recent success of veteran David Leggio in net. Grubauer’s 12-11-1 on the season with a 2.67 goals against average and .913 save percentage along with two shutouts between the pipes.

Stanislav Galiev: This Russian forward has failed to see substantial minutes in the Bears’ lineup this season and has been a healthy scratch numerous times of late. Galiev’s stock continues to fall week by week due to a lack of playing time that’s hindering his development as a former third round draft selection by Washington.

Nate Schmidt: The former Minnesota Gophers blue liner continues to rehab from injury sustained a few weeks ago, his return is unlikely for the remainder of the regular season.

Garrett Mitchell: Like Schmidt, this former Regina Pats forward continues to rehab from injury. He had shoulder surgery early in the campaign and could see some action before the regular season comes to a close. He’s a restricted free agent this summer.

Overseas

Christian Djoos: Drafted in the seventh round a few years ago, Djoos has yet to sign an entry level deal with Washington as he continues to play in Sweden. It’s unsure if and when he’ll come to the United States to join the pro game in the Capitals system. He posted one goal and 12 assists this season with Brynas in the SHL.

ECHL

Brett Flemming: This Regina native was recently recalled by the AHL’s Hershey Bears for depth purposes, but could potentially see some action in AHL. He’s passed his point total from last year (15) with 18 points through 52 games, but he’s barely averaging over a shot per game, a substantial decrease from his two prior seasons. He’s a candidate to not receive a qualifying offer by the Capitals this summer and become an unrestricted free agent.

Brandon Anderson: Signed by the Washington Capitals out of training camp in 2011, Anderson has enjoyed his best success in his second pro season with the Reading Royals of the ECHL. He ranks ninth in goals against (2.44) and 14^th in save percentage (.911) to match his 23-9-1 record for the playoff bound Royals. He has four shutouts on the year and posted a .912 save percentage in seven March games in the Reading net.
