Wings have acquired left wing Erik Cole from Dallas, pending trade call, source confirmed.

The Detroit Red Wings made a move at the trade deadline, but it wasn’t for that right-handed defenseman they have greatly coveted.
The Red Wings acquired forward Erik Cole from the Dallas Stars in exchange for prospects Mattias Backman, Mattias Janmark and a 2015 second-round pick. Detroit also gets a conditional 2015 third-round pick from Dallas. Should the Red Wings make the Eastern Conference final, Dallas would keep that third-round pick, according to the Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James.
Cole spoke on TSN 1050 in Toronto shortly after hearing he had been traded, according to MLive.com’s Ansar Khan. He had good things to say about the Red Wings:
“It’s a chance to go to a team that’s in the playoffs and has a chance to go on a good run here in the spring and hopefully win a Cup.
“It’s definitely one of those teams that has the aura about it. It’s such a great history and so many great players have played there obviously. We lost to them in the ’02 finals (with Carolina). At the time it was such heartbreak, so I haven’t had super-fond memories of that building (Joe Louis Arena) since that night. Hopefully going in there and being part of the organization, I’ll make some happy memories.”
Why This Trade Works for Detroit
I was convinced Detroit was going to stand pat at this year’s trade deadline. Many of the top defensemen the Red Wings were looking at already had been moved, and general manager Ken Holland didn’t want to have to sell the farm to get a rental.
However, with Johan Franzen’s return up in the air, Holland was looking for some depth up front, and he got in Cole. Cole, 36, is an unrestricted free agent after this season, so this is purely a rental trade. However, the Red Wings didn’t have to give up very much in order to get him, so it’s a win for Detroit.
Backman was never going to play for Detroit and Janmark was an OK prospect. This gives the Wings help in case Franzen is done for the year. — George Malik (@georgemalik) March 2, 2015
Backman left for Sweden back in December due to the lack of playing time he was getting in Grand Rapids. So really, the Red Wings don’t lose anything by trading him since he hadn’t been playing for the Griffins since late December.
As far as Janmark goes, he has 36 points in 53 games with Frolunda of the Swedish Hockey League. I haven’t heard much about him since he has been drafted, so I’m guessing he was pretty low on the depth chart of prospects.
What it boils down to is the Red Wings got Cole and a conditional third-round pick for Janmark and a second-round pick. It’s a pretty good deal for Detroit.
Where Does Erik Cole Fit?
Cole is a big left winger at 6-foot-2, 212 pounds. He’s a physical body with some scoring touch the Red Wings have lacked ever since Franzen went down.
He’d be perfect on the third line with Riley Sheahan and Stephen Weiss. Or, coach Mike Babcock might put him on the second line with Henrik Zetterberg and Gustav Nyquist, which would bump Justin Abdelkader to the third line.
Either way, it gives the Red Wings a physical presence they have lacked all season. We saw how easily they got manhandled by Boston in last year’s playoffs. Holland, obviously, is happy with the progress Alexey Marchenko and Xavier Ouellet have made and feels the blueline is good without any new additions.

I think Cole’s physical presence will be his biggest contribution to this team. If he is on the opposite wing on a line with Nyquist or Tatar, it makes it that much easier for those guys to get good shooting opportunities. Teams have obviously been smothering Nyquist this year. A guy like Cole will make more room out there for him. Not to mention Cole can score himself.
Another waste by the wings. they do need a top 6 player and this guy is a bottom 6 player. because of recent injuries he now becomes a top 6 player but can’t play as one. Big, slow, and washed out. Bad move even though he cost nothing. Yandle went for almost nothing and that would have been better! Same for Petry.
I think there is a reason that the Wings have been doing so well without Franzen. He is big strong, and has a decent shot. The problem with him, and possibly Cole as well, is that he is slow as dirt. In my opinion the Wings’ recent success recently is because their collective team speed and skating ability has proven to be difficult for other teams to deal with. Even their grinders are fast and agile. Frankly I don’t see much reason to mess with that formula.
Cole’s skating is probably his best asset. Watch the video above and see how fast he goes from gliding to full speed. Speed won’t be an issue for him.
Unfortunately, I’m not excited about this trade. Detroit just picked up another body that goes silent once the playoffs start.
While I agree, I don’t think he has ever skated with a guy like Pav or Hank in the playoffs. He was always THE GUY, now he is a role player which could be perfect for him.
According to reports, he won’t be playing with Pav or Hank. Article says he’ll be on the third line. He hasn’t scored a playoff goal in over 10 yrs. I don’t really see where this improves the Wings all that much.
It suggests he’d be a perfect fit on the third line, that doesn’t mean he will be. My opinion is he will take Franzen’s spot at least to start, but Gus back with Sheahan because he has been struggling to score as of late. Plus if Helm is out that could make the decision even easier.
Tats-Pav-Cole
Gus-Hank-Abby
Weiss-Sheahan-Pulk
Miller- Glen- Jurco
I could easily see Abby and Cole flipped due to Pavs love of Abs. I also wish Jurco and Weiss would swap spots, he needs more of a chance to produce.
Speaking of Helm, any word on his condition?
He is having an MRI today, so shoulder maybe? Still just an ‘upper body injury’.
Holland did state it is not a head injury.
Thanks, Alex.
He’s also only been in three playoff games in the last six seasons. Hasn’t had much of an opportunity to score.
Here is his playoff stats:
’01- ’02 – 23 games – 6 goals
’05- ’06 – 2 games – 0 goals
’08- ’09 – 18 games – 0 goals
’13- ’14 – 3 games – 0 goals
I still don’t see anything to get excited about here. i still don’t see anything to get excited about here, but I hope I’m wrong. And this is playing with guys like Spezza and Hemsky. This deal looks just like another Legwand.
Is Cole going to score 15 goals in the playoffs? No. He might not even get 10. But you gain a player who can help you right now and you trade two prospects (one of which didn’t even want to be on the farm team) who were never going to break the lineup anyway.
Every trade doesn’t have to be a blockbuster. They needed forward depth, and they got it.
