With less than a month until training camp opens up for the 2015-16 season, the Calgary Flames have announced that the team has reached an agreement with captain Mark Giordano to a long-term contract extension.
The contract is for six years, and, according to Elliote Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada, comes with an yearly cap hit of $6.75 million.
The Flames captain has spent his entire career with Calgary since debuting in the NHL back in the 2005-06 season. He has been the captain of the team since 2013 when Jarome Iginla was traded away.
In 510 games, Giordano has tallied 66 goals and 179 assists for 245 points. He was voted to the NHL All-Star Game for the first time last season before succumbing to a season-ending injury in February. Before his injury, Giordano led all defensemen in scoring with 11 goals and 37 assists in 61 games.
With Giordano locked up, the Flames now have their captain as well as new acquisition Dougie Hamilton signed long-term in Calgary. This duo gives the team a pair of cornerstone defensemen for the future. With the way things are trending, Calgaryt is continuing to build itself into a team to be reckoned with for a very long time.
