The Columbus Blue Jackets battled through a tough situation on Friday night. They lost two defensemen during the game with Cody Goloubef taking a puck to the face and Fedor Tyutin leaving the game with an upper body injury.
Both players left the game during the first period and will not return to the game, according to Todd Sharrock, the team’s VP of Communications.
That means the Jackets have just four defensemen available for the rest of the night. Luckily for them, they’ve given themselves some insurance, beating Pekka Rinne on their first two shots of the game and exiting the first period up 2-0. They were up 3-0 at the end of the second period.
Add to that, the team is playing some good ol’ fashioned John Tortorella hockey, having blocked 14 shots in the first period, well… they’re a little lucky and probably giving up too many shot attempts. They may have been up 3-0 at the end of the second period, but they’d been outshot 27-12.
Watch the Goloubef injury below.
Goloubef has one goal and four assists through 16 games this season. Tyutin has posted zero goals and a single assist through 19 games this season.
UPDATE:
Columbus Blue Jackets beat writer Aaron Portzline reports that Golubef has a broken jaw and was taken Dublin Methodist Hospital after taking the above shot to the face.
