The New Jersey Devils have signed 2015 2nd round draft pick Mackenzie Blackwood to a three-year, entry-level deal, the team announced on Wednesday.
The Barrie Colts netminder is currently playing with Team Canada at the 2016 World Junior Championship, where he grabbed his first game of the tournament on Tuesday with a 3-2 shootout win over Switzerland. Blackwood didn’t allow a shot to go in during the shootout.
He was expected to be the team’s starter, but an eight-game suspension in the OHL meant that he was unavailable for the first two games of the tournament and forced Hockey Canada to bring three netminders to Helsinki.
Through 24 games with the Colts in the OHL this year he has an impressive .932 save percentage.
