Hamonic officially requested a trade prior to the 2015-16 campaign, citing family reasons for his desire to play closer to his hometown of St. Malo, MB. Rumors swirled throughout the season as to where Hamonic would land with the Winnipeg Jets looking like front-runners for obvious reasons.
The Islanders and general manager Garth Snow were in no hurry to move the 6-foot-4, 205-pound defenseman until a fitting deal was found. The NHL trade deadline passed with no sign of a trade being close.
However, it seems that after mulling over his decision, Hamonic has decided to stay put.
Hamonic played 72 games for the Islanders this season, netting five goals and 21 total points. He also played 11 postseason games, scoring one goal and three total points.
His six-year NHL career consists of 395 games-played, 23 goals and 132 points.
This news will undoubtedly be a huge relief for the Islanders who have an eventful offseason ahead of them with names like Kyle Okposo and Frans Nielsen hitting unrestricted free agency and Ryan Strome becoming a restricted free agent.
