The Chicago Blackhawks announced a one-year contract extension for defenseman Viktor Svedberg on Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The team originally signed Svedberg as a free agent out of Sweden in 2013. The 24-year-old defender has yet to make his NHL debut, though you may have noticed him as the 6-foot-9 giant on the ice with the ‘Hawks when they were accepting the Stanley Cup in June.
Last season, he played 49 games for AHL Rockford, posting three goals and 11 assists. He’s got a career total of 84 AHL games behind him to go along with three seasons spent playing for Frolunda HC in the Swedish Elite League.
With the departure of Johnny Oduya and Kimmo Timonen, as well as the team trading away prospects Adam Clendening and Klas Dahlbeck last season, there’s an increased possibility that Svedberg can make his NHL debut next season. However, he is far from a lock to make his debut and he’s not without lots of competition still, especially with the possible emergence of Trevor van Riemsdyk as a NHL regular this fall.
