While the team waits for national team players to make their collective decision on the NWHL for the 2016-17 season, the Boston Pride have re-signed defenseman Blake Bolden to a one-year contract worth $14,000.
That’s a $1,000 pay cut for Bolden, taken in a season where average player salary is going up marginally. The cut is likely a product of what it might cost for the team to re-sign their key national team members while making room for top-end draft picks like Patty Kazmaier Award winner Alex Carpenter out of Boston College.
“Blake is fearless,” said general manager Haley Moore. “Her commitment to this team and to continuing to improve her game is a huge asset. Not only is she an incredible athlete, but an excellent ambassador for our sport, and a key ingredient to our success next season.”
Bolden’s one goal and nine points through 18 games last season ranked top among non-national team players on the Pride, and third among all team defenders. She was a key part of the team’s depth that helped them to lock in the league’s first-ever Isobel Cup championship.
“Boston and the Pride are my home,” said Bolden in a statement. “Last year’s season was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my life, with some of the best people. I am so excited to pick up where we left off and continue this journey with the NWHL.”
NWHL free agency began on May 1 and will run through July 31.
