With the twenty-ninth pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, the Boston Bruins have selected Trent Frederic from the U.S. National Development Team in the USDP.
About Trent Frederic
It was kind of an “off the board” selection that the Bruins made with the 29th overall pick in the first round — but they selected a player who fits in with the direction the team is going.
Trent Frederic is a silky-smooth skilled centre who put up decent numbers with the U.S. National Development Team this season. His 40 points was good for fifth on his team, but he possesses a high-level of skill. Frederic has a really good shot and is a great north-south player. At 6’2″, 203 pounds, he has one of the best shots out of all of the prospects in the 2016 draft. Frederic is committed to the University of Wisconsin in the NCAA next season.
Where does Trent Frederic fit with the Boston Bruins
Trent Frederic is a great fit to an already strong Bruins organization. The Bruins have now missed the playoffs two consecutive seasons and are looking to take their team in a much different direction than what fans and the rest of the hockey world is used to.
What used to be “The Big Bad Bruins” is now more of “The Big Smart and Skilled Bruins,” although that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. Frederic is a great addition for them, and will be a big help for them in changing the identity of their hockey club. Patrice Bergeron and David Krecji won’t be around forever, and Frederic fills their need of centre-depth in their prospect pool.
Here’s a look at the Bruins’ prospect pool with Trent Frederic.

Boston takes Trent Frederic. I like that pick. Could be a David Backes type thanks to his size and intangibles. Wisconsin commit

Boston selects Trent Frederic. A solid two-way center with size who out works opponents plays the body and has decent skill level.
