The Boston Bruins have signed free agent defenseman Matt Irwin to a one-year contract. The deal is worth $800K, according to the team who, unlike most teams, has started to include financial terms in signing announcements.
Irwin has spent the last three seasons playing for the San Jose Sharks, finding his way into 53 games last season, scoring a career-high eight goals, for a total of 19 points, one point shy of the career-high he set the season prior. The contract is a step back from the the AAV of $1 million Irwin has carried over the last two season with the Sharks.
Overall, Irwin is a veteran of 153 NHL games. Prior to getting his NHL debut, Irwin played two seasons with UMASS Amherst and two seasons with AHL Worcester.

Last season Irwin posted a Wins Above Replacement (WAR) of 5.32 and was just a touch over even with a 0.4% score-adjusted CF%Rel. He adds depth for the Bruins and will have something to prove out on a one-year deal.
