Boston Pride Sign First Player, Amanda Pelkey

On June 22nd, 2015 the Boston Pride of the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) signed Amanda Pelkey as their first player in the history of the organization. This signing came a few days after the inaugural draft for the NWHL.

Pelkey recently graduated from the University of Vermont where she co-captained the women’s hockey team. In 127 games over four years, Pelkey tallied 49 goals and 56 assists making her Vermont’s all-time leading scorer. Pelkey’s teammates voted her MVP of the team because of her outstanding display of leadership and skill.

While at Vermont she also earned a spot on the 2011-12 Hockey East All-Rookie Team, 2013-14 New England Women’s Division I All-Star, and 2013-14 Second Team Hockey East All Star.

Before heading to Vermont, Pelkey spent some time on the international stage. She was a member of the U.S. Women’s National U18 Team three times where she won gold (2009) and silver (2010) at the IIHF World Women’s U18 Championship.

The Pride will benefit from Pelky’s ability to score goals both on and off the power play. She is also a speedster who can wear out the opposition. The best skill Pelkey possesses is her ability to create plays, even if it means she’s not the one scoring the goal. If a teammate is open or in a better position to score, Pelkey has no problem passing the puck to her teammate.

Pelkey’s unselfish style of play will take her far in the NWHL.
