The Toronto Maple Leafs are bringing in RW Brad Boyes for a training camp tryout, according to CBS Sports Radio’s Andy Strickland.
Brad Boyes was bought out over the summer by the Florida Panthers. He was entering the final year of a contract that would pay him an AAV of $2,625,000.
Boyes, 33, grabbed 14 goals and 24 assists through 78 games last season. He’s maybe not a $2.625 million player any more, but he’s far from being without use and with that in mind and a look over the Panthers roster, you might not have guessed at the start of the summer that Boyes would be in the position he’s in, getting bought out and ending the summer without a contract.
Nonetheless, Boyes is joining Toronto for training camp. It’s a team full of prospects and reclamation projects. If Boyes earns a contract, don’t be surprised if it’s a one-year deal that looks a lot like the snow drift of one-year deals piled up in the driveway to the Air Canada Centre. The Leafs are handing out prove-it contracts left and right and it’s giving them some solid players on cheap deals who could be moved at the trade deadline.
He’ll be joining Devin Setoguchi and Curtis Glencross, who are also on PTOs with the Leafs.
Lots of familiar names are taking PTOs this season. Keep up with all the tryout contracts with The Hockey Writers’ 2015 PTO Tracker.
