It’s been another seasons of ups and downs for Joffrey Lupul, who hasn’t been able to remain healthy for an extended period of time since joining the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2010. It was another down for Lupul yesterday as he was placed on the injured reserve with a groin problem.
Fortunately for the Maple Leafs, Lupul is only expected to miss a week or so.
That doesn’t mean the team can go a week without finding a replacement, though, and a decision has been made.
Leafs call-up Carter Ashton
— Mark Masters (@markhmasters) November 29, 2013
This isn’t the first time Carter Ashton has been called up by the Maple Leafs. In fact, he has played the majority of his season with the Leafs, notching one point, an assist, in 13 games while going plus-two. His three goals and two assists in four games with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies made him an obvious choice to be called up once Lupul went down to injury.
It remains to be seen exactly where Carter Ashton will line up or if he will even suit up at all. If so, expect one of Jerred Smithson or Peter Holland to sit, allowing Jay McClement to move back over to centre and Ashton to play on the wing.
The Maple Leafs are scheduled to pay a visit to the Buffalo Sabres tonight followed by another road game against Montreal on Saturday.
UPDATE: 3:52 PM EST
It appears Peter Holland will indeed be a healthy scratch, leading one to believe that Jay McClement will play down the middle and Carter Ashton will suit up on the wing.
Peter holland looks like a scratch tonight as does morgan rielly. James reimer starts. carter ashton has been called up. #TMLtalk
