The 27-year-old Weise becomes the seventh-highest-paid forward on the Flyers. The Winnipeg, MB native is coming off a season that saw him score a career-high 14 goals in 56 games with the Montreal Canadiens, before being traded at the deadline to the Chicago Blackhawks, where he totaled one assist in 15 games. On the year, Weise totaled 27 points in 71 games, and added a goal in four playoff games.
Weise should fit well as a regular in the Flyers’ lineup in a checking line role, and he brings grit and toughness to his game, which is a common theme in the team’s forward group. After being undervalued during his tenure with the Vancouver Canucks, Weise fit in well with the Habs after being traded to Montreal at the 2014 trade deadline. His short-lived tenure in Chicago didn’t pan out as well, as Weise was brought on with expectations of being a key depth addition for a Blackhawks Cup run.
Weise, a former 111th overall draft pick to the New York Rangers in 2008, has spent parts of six NHL seasons between the Rangers, Canucks, Canadiens and Blackhawks. He’s totaled 37 goals, 86 points and 260 penalty minutes in 329 NHL games. Weise also has accumulated 57 goals, 111 points and 251 penalty minutes in 194 AHL games.
