The New Jersey Devils have given 20-year-old goaltender Ken Appleby a three-year, entry-level deal, accord to Tom Gulitti.
The undrafted North Bay-native spent the last three seasons in the OHL playing for the Oshawa Generals, putting up increasingly impressive totals through each successive season.
Last year, he took to the net 50 times during the regular season for the Generals, posting a .924 save percentage. He then led them through the postseason, taking them all the way to a Memorial Cup championship. Through 16 postseason performances he posted a .926 Sv% and then had a 2.08 GAA and a .915 Sv% through four games in the Memorial Cup.
In addition he was named to the Memorial Cup All-Star Team, was the Memorial Cup’s Most Outstanding Goaltender, an OHL second-team All-Star and touted the best GAA in the OHL through the regular season with a 2.08 mark.
Appleby is at the Albany Devils’ training camp on a tryout and has performed well, including making 28 saves in 2-1 win over the Hersey Bears. Gulitti notes that Appleby is likely to start the season playing for the Adirondack Phantoms in the ECHL, though he has not yet been assigned there.
The 6-foot-4 goaltender is the only player on an amateur tryout the organization signed through both New Jersey and Albany training camps.
