Brenden Morrow (born January 16, 1979) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2014-15 season. Drafted 25th overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars, Morrow returned to the Western Hockey League (WHL) to play for the Portland Winter Hawks for two more seasons, putting up 85 and 86 point seasons, while combining those two seasons for 432 penalty minutes. Morrow made his NHL debut in the 1999-2000 season, playing in 64 games and registering a respectable 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists) along with 81 penalty minutes. The Stars made the Stanley Cup Final for a second consecutive year, but were defeated by the New Jersey Devils in six games. Morrow amassed six points in the 21 games played, and was named the team’s rookie of the year.
In the 2003-04 season, Morrow was named an alternate captain for the Stars after four seasons with the organization. His point totals climbed in the two seasons prior, and he registered his first 20-goal campaign with the letter on his sweater. Ahead of the 2006-07 season, he was named the team’s captain and a year later he put up career-highs in goals (32) and points (74). Blossoming into a true power forward, Morrow’s 12-year stint with the Stars came to an end during the 2012-13 season. With the Stars headed towards an off-season of no playoffs for a fifth consecutive season, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. He registered 14 points in 15 games, adding four more in 14 playoff games. He went on to play in two more seasons, one with the St. Louis Blues and his last year with the Stanley Cup Final Lightning, before calling it a career and announcing his retirement. He returned to the Stars on a one-day contract in order to retire as a member of the team that drafted him.
Morrow represented Canada at the international level on seven occasions, capturing gold medals at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, and the 2004 World Cup and World Cup of Hockey tournaments. He also added a 1999 IIHF World Junior Championship silver medal, as well as a silver medal in the 2005 World Cup. For his four seasons served with the Winter Hawks, where he impressed with three consecutive 80-point seasons, Morrow was added to the team’s Hall of Fame in 2018.
