Undrafted at the NHL level, Mermis went down the path of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), suiting up for the London Knights in three seasons. In 2015, he was named an alternate captain, but was traded to the Oshawa Generals after 30 games. Mermis and the Generals went on to win the OHL Championship and later on became Memorial Cup Champions. He spent his tenure with the Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League (AHL), become an alternate captain during the 2017-18 season and receiving a promotion to captain the following year. Mermis signed with the New Jersey Devils the following season, registering his first-career goal and finishing with four points in ten games. He was signed by the Wild in 2020-21 and was named an alternate captain for the Iowa Wild in the 2021-22 season.
