Derek Bekar (born September 15, 1975) is a former Canadian ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the New York Islanders during the 2003-2004 season. Drafted 205th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, Bekar had a successful three-year run with the University of New Hampshire at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) level. He made the leap to the pros in 1998, playing in 51 games for the Worcester IceCats of the American Hockey League (AHL) and recording 36 points.
The following season, Bekar made his NHL debut, appearing in one game with the Blues. After two more seasons in the AHL, he joined the Los Angeles Kings for the 2001-02 season and played primarily with the Manchester Monarchs. He earned a six-game stint with the Kings the following year, but failed to record a point. The trend continued the following year with the Islanders, as Bekar was reduced to four games, recorded no points, and spent the remainder of the year in the AHL. This would bring an end to his NHL journey, concluding with 11 games total and no points to his name.
Bekar’s career continued overseas, with stops in Scotland, Slovenia, Germany, and Switzerland. He excelled in Europe, winning championships with HK Jesenice (Slovenia) and Lausanne HC (Switzerland). He played one final season in the Netherlands, suiting up for HYS The Hague and recording 32 points in 27 games.
