Jonathon Blum (born January 30, 1989) is an American ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the Minnesota Wild during the 2014-2015 season. Drafted 23rd overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Blum was a standout at the Western Hockey League (WHL) level. He won a Memorial Cup, WHL Championship, and was named the Canadian Hockey League’s (CHL) best defenseman of the year in 2009. That year, he recorded 66 points in 51 games, and added 18 points in 17 playoff games. Following the Vancouver Giants’ elimination in the playoffs, Blum joined the Milwaukee Admirals, appearing in five playoff games.
After a full 80-game season with the Admirals, Blum made his NHL debut the following year. In 23 games, he recorded three goals and eight points. Despite splitting his time with Nashville and their AHL affiliate, his NHL time grew each year, and Blum became a serviceable defenseman. While his offensive game never carried over to the NHL level, he played an important role for the Predators bottom pairing and penalty kill. Following the conclusion of the 2011-12 season, Nashville failed to qualify Blum, making him an unrestricted free agent and losing him to the Wild.
Blum appeared in 19 games across two seasons with the Wild organization, but couldn’t crack a full-time role. His offensive game picked up in Iowa during the 2014-15 season after he recorded 12 goals and 37 points in 66 games. Unfortunately, it was the final season in North America for Blum as he signed in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) with Admiral Vladivostok. He served as their captain in one season and an alternate captain in another, before his trade to HK Sochi. After two seasons in Sweden, Blum signed with EHC München of the Deutsch Hockey League (DEL). His 34 points in 53 games became his most productive season in the last seven years.
