Mark Bell (born August 5, 1980) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the Anaheim Ducks during the 2011-12 season. Drafted 8th overall in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks, Bell got his first taste of the NHL during the 2000-01 season, playing in five games. He would become a regular in the Blackhawks’ line-up the following season, playing in four seasons and missing two games over that span. Bell was traded in the summer of 2006, to the San Jose Sharks, where he would play one season. He spent the following two seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization but was acquired by the New York Rangers during 2008-09 after he was placed on re-entry waivers.
Bell appeared in two seasons with the Klotzen Flyers of Switzerland’s Nationalliga A, but after not being offered a contract for a third season, he signed with the Anaheim Ducks. Bell appeared in five games, the first time he’d played at that level in four years, before being sent back down to complete the remainder of the season with their AHL affiliate Syracuse Crunch. Bell spent the final four years of his hockey career in Germany, playing for the Iserlohn Roosters and the Eisbären Berlin of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). Bell served as an alternate captain for the last two seasons with Berlin, retiring at the conclusion of the 2015-16 season.
Bell represented Team Canada at the 2000 IIHF World Junior Championship, where the team won a bronze medal. He currently lives a life of sobriety after an incident during the 2007-08 season saw him involved in a hit-and-run incident, where he was driving under the influence. As a result, Bell was sentenced to six months in jail. The situation ultimately landed Bell into Stage 2 of the NHL/NHLPA Substance Abuse Program, where he recovered and begin his sobriety. Bell currently serves as Director of Player Development for the Arizona Coyotes.
