Mark Tinordi (born May 9, 1966) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the Washington Capitals during the 1998-99 season. Undrafted at the NHL level, Tinordi signed with the New York Rangers as a free agent in 1987 after impressing the team with his 66-point season with the Calgary Wranglers of the Ontario Hockey League. He spent the year split with the Rangers and International Hockey League (IHL). The following year, he was traded to the Minnesota North Stars in a five-player deal, including the rights to two players and one draft pick.
Tinordi’s hard-nosed style was an immediate click with the team, who had been longing for a physical defenseman to step into the lineup and be a steadying force. His play helped the North Stars to an unpredictable 1991 Stanley Cup Final appearance, and the following year he was named the captain of the team. He registered career highs in goals (15) and points (42) during the 1992-93 season, and joined the North Stars in their relocation to Dallas, continuing to serve as captain for one more year. In the following offseason, Tinordi was traded to the Washington Capitals, along with defenseman Rick Mrozik, for defenseman Derian Hatcher. He spent the final five seasons of his career with Washington, serving as an alternate captain for one year, and aiding the team to three playoff appearances.
Selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 1999 Expansion Draft, Tinordi elected to announce his retirement prior to the 1999-2000 season. He finished with 663 games played, amassing 200 points and 1,514 penalty minutes. Two of his four children, Jarred and Matt, followed in his footsteps to play hockey. Jarred Tinordi has appeared in over 100 games in seven seasons in the NHL, while Matt Tinordi was a good NCAA player and captained the RPI (Rensselaer Polytech. Inst.) in his final year with the team.
