Martin Lapointe (born September 12, 1973) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL split between the Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators during the 2007-08 season. Drafted 10th overall in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, Lapointe spent the first two years in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League as the captain of the Laval Titan, earning a handful of games with the Red Wings and their AHL affiliate Adirondack Red Wings. Splitting time in the NHL and AHL during the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons, Lapointe developed the defensive side to his game in order to be a more complete player at the NHL level. The following year, he earned a permanent role with Detroit, playing in 58 games and registering nine points.
Lapointe became an integral part of the Red Wings of the late 1990s, aiding the team to capture the 1997 and 1998 Stanley Cup. While he wasn’t known for his offensive instincts, Lapointe added a physical edge, excelled at playing a tough, defensive game, and delivered big performances in big games. Lapointe scored the Stanley Cup clinching goal in 1998. He joined the Boston Bruins for the 2001-02 season after spending ten years in Detroit, and was named the alternate captain. In three seasons with the Bruins, he played in 205 games and amassed 40 goals and 43 assists, but the team couldn’t make it out of the first round of the playoffs in each of the three seasons. Following the 2004-05 lockout, Lapointe took the year off before returning for the 2005-06 season with the Blackhawks.
Lapointe’s time in the NHL lasted three more years, serving as the alternate captain for two years before he was named the team’s captain for the 2007-08 season. He was traded that year to the Senators for a 2008 6th-round pick, as the Blackhawks were out of the playoff picture and looking to gain assets for their rebuilding phase. Following his retirement from hockey, Lapointe became a respected member in the Blackhawks scouting team before he was hired by the Montreal Canadiens as their director of player development and personnel. A native of Ville St. Pierre, Quebec, an arena from his hometown is named after him (l’aréna Martin-Lapointe).
