Scott Barney (born March 27, 1979) is a former Canadian ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the Atlanta Thrashers during the 2005-2006 season. Drafted at 29th overall by the Los Angeles Kings at the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Barney represented the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) as their captain, recording 41 goals and 67 points in 44 games. All looked promising for the young forward before a severe back injury prevented him from playing hockey at any level for three full seasons.
He made a full return to the game in the 2002-03 season, making his NHL debut with the Kings. In five games, he didn’t register any points and finished with a minus-1 rating. The following year, he recorded 11 points in 19 games with the Kings and produced well at the American Hockey League (AHL) level with the Manchester Monarchs, picking up 34 points in 44 games. After sitting out the NHL lockout year, Barney returned with the Thrashers for the 2005-06 season and played in three games. He spent the remainder of the year again in the AHL.
Following two more seasons in the AHL, Barney took his career overseas, signing in the Deutsch Eishockey League (DEL) with the Augsburger Panther. His international career featured stops in Finland’s SM-Liiga, Switzerland’s National League, the Austrian league, and the Asia League. After a successful run with China Dragon, Barney signed with Anyang Halla, the South Korean team of the Asia League, where he’d help the club capture the Asia League Championship. Barney retired at the conclusion of the tournament, finishing with 160 points in 11 games in three seasons.
