Shayne Corson (born August 13, 1966) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the Dallas Stars during the 2003-04 season. Drafted 8th overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, Corson became an NHL regular during the 1986-87 season after registering 98 points in 47 games with the Hamilton Steelhawks of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) the year before. He quickly established himself as a powerforward that was worthy of being selected in the top ten of his draft class, registering two 20-goal seasons and one 30-goal season with the Canadiens in his first six years with the team. He also managed to accumulate 100+ penalty minutes during that span, recording a total of 889 penalty minutes in six seasons. In the summer of 1992, Corson was packaged in a deal along with Brent Gilchrist and Vladimir Vujtek and sent to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Vincent Damphousse and a 1993 4th-round pick. Damphousse would go on to lead the Canadiens in points, and the team would capture their 24th Stanley Cup.
Corson spent three seasons with the Oilers, serving as an alternate captain in his first two years before becoming the team’s captain in his final season. The final year in Edmonton was somewhat controversial however, as later in the season he was stripped of the captaincy, due to an on-ice altercation with Jason Arnott. Failing to live up to the hype in Edmonton, Corson signed with the St. Louis Blues for the 1995-96 season and played a similar role to that of his time in Montreal. He became the team’s captain the same year after Brett Hull was stripped, but was later stripped himself in favour of newly-acquired Wayne Gretzky. The following season, he was traded back to Montreal in a package deal for Pierre Turgeon, Craig Conroy, and Rory Fitzpatrick.
His second stint with Montreal lasted three seasons and although he returned to form during the 1997-98 season with the most productive season in the past seven seasons, his regression showed in both his play on the ice and his production. Corson’s final three seasons were spent with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but during the 2003-04 season, the Stars signed him late into the year in an attempt to add some grit and veteran leadership to their lineup. They were eliminated in five games by the Colorado Avalanche in the first round, and Corson registered one assist.
