Edmonton defenseman flies under the radar
When you play for a team that has won two of the last three WHL Championships, and a Memorial Cup Championship, you have to fight for attention. The Edmonton Oil Kings have a ton of top notch names and prospects, many of which have already been selected by NHL teams. Flying under that radar is defenseman Dysin Mayo. Mayo is a sold two-way defenseman who can skate well and has some good offensive instincts. He had a productive year for a stacked Edmonton team this year, chipping in seven goals and 35 points, which were career highs. He broke out big time in the playoffs for the Oil Kings and scored three goals with 15 points in 21 as Edmonton marched towards a Memorial Cup victory.
Can that playoff run vault Mayo up on draft boards? He’s a solid player, makes smart plays in his own end but won’t wow you in any one facet of the game. If he played on a lessor team he might have been given a bigger role and stand out more. As it is, he was able to contribute to a deep team and just might end up making a name for himself.
Where He’ll Land in June:
Mayo is ranked anywhere from the 50’s to the mid 100’s on various NHL draft lists. Was his playoff run enough to convince a team that he is worth a third round pick? Going that high seems to be a stretch on paper but don’t be surprised if Mayo is one of the sleepers of this year’s draft.
Scout’s Honour:
“Long term project on defense who has the wheels, but has yet to understand when to use them. Very raw in his own end, and runs around too much. Must learn when to activate into offense. Needs work on his outlets in transition. It is his earnest compete level and confidence he can make plays out of the ordinary that may lead to teams moving off him developmental. Might just grow his game into a strong and patient one. ” — Bill Placzek, Draft Site
