Founded in 1909 by J. Ambrose O’Brien, the Montreal Canadiens are the longest continuously operating professional ice hockey team worldwide and the only existing NHL club to predate the founding of the NHL. Their first NHL game was played on Dec. 19, 1917, versus the Ottawa Senators, which they won 7-4. They are the most successful NHL franchise with 25 championships, 11 more than the second-place Toronto Maple Leafs. They also happen to be the most recent Canadian franchise to win the Stanley Cup, having done so in 1993. Additionally, 65 players who donned a Canadiens sweater during their careers have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Canadiens Could Benefit From New KHL Rules and Get Demidov Early

Maybe general manager Kent Hughes opened the door for the ex-member of the Tampa Bay Lightning to make the Habs roster out of training camp for 2024-25, maybe not. If Hughes did though, he’s got a lot more room to make this offseason. No Room for Barre-Boulet The Canadiens simply don’t have room up front as their roster currently stands for an undersized 5-foot-10 (178 pounds) 27-year-old, with only 68 games of NHL experience (294 in the American Hockey League). Regardless of where he…

The Chris Chelios Trade Revisited

It’s rare that one trade catches an entire sport by surprise, but when the Montreal Canadiens dealt defenseman Chris Chelios and a second-round draft choice to the Chicago Blackhawks for center Denis Savard in the summer of 1990, it sent shockwaves all throughout the NHL. Each city was caught off-guard…

The Montreal Forum 1908-1996

The Old Forum in Montreal — Opening night, November 9, 1908, was a sensation and all 3,000 pairs of roller skates available for rental saw extensive use as thousands of Montrealers came to wander through, gawk at or try out the facilities at what was hyped in the press as “the largest, finest and most hygienic roller rink,” a decent establishment, “catering only to the highest classes of patronage.”
