Two more signings are in, as the NWHL builds up to their inaugural season, starting in October. On Friday, the New York Riveters signed defenseman Elena Orlando and the Boston Pride signed forward Corinne Buie.
Orlando, a California-native, played in the NCAA for Quinnipiac from 2010-14, totaling three goals and eight assists through 84 games for the Bobcats. In the 2014-15 season, she spent time playing for the Sundsvall Wildcats in Sweden, according to Elite Prospects (who are currently adding female hockey players to their database).
Buie played NCAA hockey with Providence College, scoring 44 goals and 56 assists over her four years there. Last season she went to the CWHL, playing for the Boston Blades, who selected her in the 2014 draft. Buie scored five goals and four assists through 20 games for the Blades last season.
The Blades went on to win the 2014 Clarkson Cup. Buie posted a pair of assists in the three-game playoffs, including an assist on Janine Weber’s game-winner in the championship. Weber was the first free agent to sign in the NWHL, which she did on June 11 of this year. She’ll spend next season playing for the Riveters with Orlando.
Via the league’s release, Orlando said of her signing:
I’m excited to play in the NWHL because it is a giant step for women’s sports… Ever since I started playing hockey I’ve dreamed of playing at the highest level and being able to reach that is amazing.
The NWHL’s season will open on October 11.
