Bad news came for the Pittsburgh Penguins Friday, as center Evgeni Malkin went out of the game during the second period with a wrist injury. The team announced Saturday that he will be returning to Pittsburgh for further evaluation and will be held out of Sunday’s game against the New York Rangers.
The team hopes to have further information after Malkin is seen by physicians in Pittsburgh.
The injury occurred when Malkin went behind the Columbus Blue Jackets net to retrieve a loose puck. He absorbed a hit from Columbus defenseman Dalton Prout and immediately was holding his wrist gingerly. He left the game and did not return.
The team didn’t have much to report on Friday or Saturday. General manager Jim Rutherford simply said that they “don’t know much at this point.”
Here’s the play where the injury occurred.
