Flames Sign Sean Monahan to Long-Term Extension

The Calgary Flames signed forward Sean Monahan to a seven-year contract extension the team announced on Friday.

While terms of the deal were not disclosed, Hockey Night in Canada’s Elliotte Friedman reported Monahan’s deal is around a $6.3 million AAV, similar to Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon.

Monahan, 21, skated in 81 games with the Flames in the 2015-16 season and tallied 27 goals and 63 points. In his three-year NHL career, the native of Brampton, Ontario, has played in 237 games and registered 80 goals and 159 points. Monahan was originally drafted by the Flames 6th overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Monahan discussed his intention of signing a long-term deal to stay with the organization and teammate Johnny Gaudreau, in an interview with TSN last month. “I definitely want to be there (Calgary) for a long time. So I would prefer a longer-term contract, but that’s not up for me to decide. So I think I want to be there, I want to be in Calgary for the rest of my career, so that’s something that I am looking forward to doing,” he said. “We want to be there, we both want to play together, and we want to win in Calgary.”

The chemistry between Monahan and Gaudreau has been an integral part of the Flames since they were paired together two years ago. In the last two seasons, Monahan and Gaudreau have combined for 112 goals and 267 points.

With Monahan signed to a long-term deal, the focus for general manager Brad Treliving turns to re-signing Gaudreau who is currently a restricted free agent.
