After reported contract negotiations between Troy Brouwer and the Calgary Flames, the team has officially inked the 30-year-old winger to a four-year contract.
Brouwer to CGY, reported at 4 years, $4.5M AAV.
Love that for Flames. He’s a high, high character player, and still can play.— Mark Spector (@SportsnetSpec) July 1, 2016
The deal is worth $18 million for Brouwer, and his $4.5 million AAV makes him the team’s highest paid forward. His addition should be a welcoming one for the Flames up front; he’ll likely boost the team’s offense in a top-six forward role while bringing veteran leadership to a young core of players that includes Sam Bennett and restricted free agents Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan, among others.
Brouwer spent 2015-16 with the St. Louis Blues, after being traded from the Washington Capitals last summer in a major trade that sent T.J. Oshie to the Caps. Brouwer totaled 18 goals, 39 points and 62 penalty minutes in playing all 82 games with the Blues last season.
Brouwer was originally drafted 214th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2004, and has suited up for the Blackhawks, Capitals and Blues over parts of 10 NHL seasons. He’s scored 20-plus goals three times, and set a career high in goals (25) in 2013-14, and in assists (22) in 2014-15. His 43 points in each of those respective seasons are both tied for career-bests. He also won a Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010.
