Game of Numbers: Los Angeles Kings Edition

The Game of Numbers is an exclusive THW series looking at upcoming milestones around the NHL. Each team will be looked at individually in three parts – individual player milestones, franchise player milestones, and players that rank in the top 100 in NHL history in any big statistical category.

Over the past few seasons, the Los Angeles Kings have been amongst the NHL’s best teams. Built for a strong playoff runs and backstopped by one of the league’s best goalies in Jonathan Quick, they don’t always have to finish atop the Western Conference to be considered a playoff favourite.

While some might consider their regular season mediocre at times, their club is built with tenacity and skill – experienced veterans leading the way for the younger players. With that said, the Kings have continued building and will remain contenders over the coming years.

It’s hard to believe sometimes how long some of the Kings players have been around. Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown still seem like a vital part of the Los Angeles organization and yet, both are strong veteran players on the team. For guys like that, who have won Cups and been in the league for some time, personal milestones are just an added bonus. Regardless – rookie or veteran – it’s always a good feeling to hit those personal marks during an NHL career.

Los Angeles Kings Franchise Milestones

With former players like Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robataille, it’s amazing where some of their current players rank on the franchises all-time lists. But having played their entire careers with the Kings, players like Brown, Kopitar and Drew Doughty have found a way to climb the ranks.

• Dustin Brown (785) needs 21 games played to pass Rob Blake (805) for 4th on the team’s all-time list.
• Anze Kopitar (666) needs 8 games played to pass Mike Murphy (673) for 8th on the team’s all-time list.
• Drew Doughty (507) needs 30 games played to pass Alex Frolov (536) for 18th on the team’s all-time list.

Goals:

• Anze Kopitar (215) needs 8 goals to pass Charles Simmer (222) for 7th on the team’s all-time list.
• Dustin Brown (206) needs 10 goals to pass Anze Kopitar (215) for 8th on the team’s all-time list.

Assists:

• Anze Kopitar (380) needs 5 assists to pass Robert Goring (384) for 6th on the team’s all-time list.

• Martin Jones (7) needs 1 shutout to pass Gerry Desjardins and Gary Edwards (7) for 8th on the team’s all-time list.

‘Top 100’ Milestones

While his struggles over the past few seasons have been well-documented, Mike Richards is among the NHL’s all-time best when it comes to the penalty kill. The former 24th overall pick in 2003 has spent his career as a two-way player and while he currently resides in the American Hockey League, the 30-year-old Richards still has his name in hockey history.

• Richards (28) needs 1 shorthanded goal to pass Todd Marchant, Mark Howe, Rod Brind’Amour, Bernie Nicholls and Jeremy Roenick (28) for 26th on the NHL’s all-time list.

While his skill has never really been questioned, Marian Gaborik’s ability to stay healthy has been his downfall in remaining with one organization. Los Angeles is the fourth team the 33-year-old has played for and while he’s spent ample time out of the lineup, the former third overall pick has found a way to come up big when his teams needed him. That’s why he finds himself among the NHL’s best in game-winning goals.

• Gaborik (65) needs 1 game-winning goal to pass John LeClair and Shane Doan (65) for 51st on the NHL’s all-time list.

Part of the former Flyers duo, Jeff Carter is in his fourth season with the Los Angeles Kings. Whether it’s been with the Flyers, the Blue Jackets or the Kings, the former first-round pick is another player that has found his way into the NHL’s best when it comes to game-winning goals.

• Carter (57) needs 1 game-winning goal to pass Joseph Pronovost and Darryl Sittler (57) for 82nd on the NHL’s all-time list.

Easily considered one of the best goaltenders in the league right now, Jonathan Quick finds himself climbing the ranks of the NHL’s all-time lists. At 29, the former third-round pick still has a lot of hockey ahead of him. With two Cups, it’s not surprising that he’s among the NHL’s all-time best in multiple categories.

• Quick (35) needs 1 shutout to pass Olaf Kolzig, Patrick Lalime and Ryan Miller (35) for 43rd on the NHL’s all-time list.
