According to multiple reports, the Montreal Canadiens have placed forward Alexander Semin on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a mutually agreed upon termination of his one-year contract with the team.
The Canadiens waived Semin earlier this week and he cleared on Tuesday. The team had planned to assign him to the St. John’s IceCaps of the AHL, but it appears that Semin is not interested in reporting to the AHL.
The Habs had signed Semin to a steal of a deal at $1.1 million for a single year following his buyout with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Many expected this termination to come after he was waived initially. TVA’s Renaud Lavoie said Tuesday that Semin may be looking to find a KHL team over the next few days. At the same time, KHL writer Slava Malamud reported that no KHL team had expressed interest in signing Semin as of Tuesday. Though, that situation can change quickly.
Through 15 games this season, Semin has scored one goal and three assists while posting a 3.83% score-adjusted CF%Rel, the fourth best mark among team forwards.
Semin’s line also had the best CF% and scoring chance’s for percentage (SCF%) of any line in Montreal who skated at least 100 minutes together.
Montreal will have a small cap recapture penalty for terminating his contract.
