The St. Louis Blues announced on Saturday that forward Jaden Schwartz had surgery to repair a broken ankle sustained during practice on Friday. The team expects him to miss a minimum of 12 weeks, saying that he’s set to be re-evaluated at that time.
The injury was sustained during a drill when Schwartz slipped and slid into a goal post. he had to be helped off the ice by the coaching staff. He was immediately taken to the hospital.
Goaltender Brian Elliott attempted to explain what happened on the Blues’ site:
“He shot the puck and then the puck bounced off,” said Brian Elliott, who saw the incident. “He went to reach back for the rebound, kind of lost his edge and kind of came back into me and into the mesh of the net…hopefully he’s alright.”
This is a pretty massive blow to a team that is already struggling with injury early in the season. They’re down Robby Fabbri (concussion) and Kevin Shattenkirk (lower body) who could return soon, as well as Patrik Berglund (shoulder) who will be out another couple months and it was announced this week that they’ll be without Paul Stastny for at least five weeks.
Through seven games this season, Schwartz has posted four assists and 15 shots.
On Friday the team recalled 22-year-old Ty Rattie, who has played 13 career NHL games.
