Providence defenseman and St. Louis Blues prospect Jake Walman will have season-ending surgery, the team announced Wednesday. The surgery is due to an injury that initially occurred in December.
It’s been a tough season for the sophomore defenseman. He holds dual citizenship and planned to play for Team USA at the World Junior Championship. However, the IIHF ruled that he was ineligible to play for Team USA until he played two complete seasons in the U.S. He was in the midst of his second season.
He then got an invite to Team Canada camp, but suffered an injury that kept him from being able to play in the tournament. While the team hasn’t disclosed details, it’s assumed that this is the initial injury that the team’s announcement refers to.
Now he’s being taken off the roster as Providence gets set to face UMASS Lowell in the Hockey East Semifinal at TD Garden in Boston on Friday.
Walman has had a huge boost in offensive production this season, after scoring one goal and 15 assists through 41 games in his freshman season, he’s scored 13 goals and 15 assists in just 27 games. That has him tied for the fourth most points on the team.
