Jets Prospects Prepare for Subway Super Series

Super Series gets underway Monday November 10th in Saskatoon

The Subway Super Series, previously known as the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge (2004-2008), and the RE/MAX Canada-Russia Challenge (2003), features four teams; one team from each of the three components of the CHL (OHL, WHL, and QMJHL), as well as Team Russia.

This year’s Super Series will feature four Winnipeg Jets prospects:

  1. Forward Nicolas Petan of the Portland Winterhawks (WHL)
  2. Defenceman Josh Morrissey of the Prince Albert Raiders (WHL)
  3. Goaltender Eric Comrie of the Tri-City Americans (WHL)
  4. Forward Pavel Kraskovsky of MHC Loko Yaroslavl (Molodezhnaya Hokkeynaya Liga (MHL), Russian Minor Hockey League)

Josh Morrissey and Nic Petan have been named assistant captains for Game 1 vs. Russia. Buffalo prospect Sam Reinhart (Kootenay Ice) will be team captain for both games versus Russia.

Previous Experience

All three WHL Jets prospects played on Team WHL in last year’s Super Series. This will be goaltender Eric Comrie’s third Super Series whilst Petan and Morrissey will be playing their second.

This will be 18 year-old Pavel Kraskovsky’s first Super Series. Kraskovsky currently plays in the Russian Junior Hockey League, the MHL, and is second among team scoring with 18 points (4G, 14A) in 20 games played. He is the third youngest of 31 players (17F, 11D, 3G) named to Team Russia and he may not see much action. Team Russia full roster.

Comrie had 22 saves in a 3-2 loss to the Russians last year in Red Deer, Alberta and turned aside 17 0r 18 shots in a 5-2 loss to Russia in Game 6 of the 2012 Super Series after replacing starting goaltender Laurent Brossoit midway through the second period. Current Jets rookie Adam Lowry scored both goals for Team WHL in that game.

Morrissey and Petan were both held pointless last year in their Super Series debuts; Morrissey is a +3 in 2 games and Petan is a +1, also in 2 games.

Both Morrissey and Petan will be playing major roles this year as assistant captains for the club and look to be top scorers within their two-game miniseries. Both are offensive leaders on their respective WHL teams; Morrissey, 19, has 11 points (5G, 6A) through 12 games; Petan has 13 points (1G, 12A) though 12 games.

Goaltender Eric Comrie is 7-6-0 with a 2.68 GAA and 0.914 sv% in 13 games played so far this year with Tri-City. Comrie is joined by Edmonton Oil Kings goalie Tristan Jarry, who had a few nice words to say of Comrie in an interview with Annie Fowler of the Tri-City Hearld; “He is excellent, he is very focused and reads the play very well. He is good positionally and can make an acrobatic save if he needs to.”

Comrie said right back, “He’s one of the best puck-handling goalies I’ve ever seen in my life, he’s really good at reading the plays. He’s really athletic and acrobatic. He is also very sound technically. I am a big fan of his game.”

Schedule

Team WHL will face Team Russia in Game 1 of the Super Series in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on Monday, November 10th and Game 2 will be played on Remembrance Day, Tuesday, November 11th, in Brandon, Manitoba.

Team OHL will host games 3 (Peterborough, ON) and 4 (Kingston, ON) whilst Team QMJHL will close out the series with Games 5 (Bathurst, NB) and 6 (Rimouski, QC).
