Detroit Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey is going to miss around six weeks, according to MLive’s Ansar Khan.
GM Ken Holland announced Wednesday that Quincey will have surgery to repair his injured ankle this weekend, potentially shelving him until close to the new year. Injuries have lingered for Quincey in the young season, with him being placed on injured reserve in late October after suffering a reported concussion.
The 6-foot-2 defender played 73 games for the Red Wings last year, putting up 18 points and 77 penalty minutes. This season he’s played seven games, scoring a goal and two assists. He is in the final year of a $4.25 million deal, after which he will be an unrestricted free agent.
While he’s not being shortlisted for future Hockey Hall of Fame consideration, his absence is a blow for the middling Red Wings who are currently 8-6-1 for 17 standings points. That’s good enough for second place in the Atlantic Division. But with every team outside of the Montreal Canadiens playing some mediocre hockey, it’s a fragile hold on second place.
Just two points separate second place from sixth and no team from the Atlantic finds themselves in a wild card spot.
