The Toronto Maple Leafs signed restricted free agent defenseman Connor Carrick to a two-year contract the team announced on Friday. The deal is worth $1.5 million, and will pay Carrick $850,000 in 2016-17 and $650,000 in 2017-18, reported The Toronto Star’s Kevin McGran.

Carrick, 22, registered four points in 16 games during the 2015-16 with the Maple Leafs after being acquired by the club as part of the deal that also sent forward Brooks Laich to Toronto from the Washington Capitals in exchange for Daniel Winnik on Feb. 28, 2016.
The Illinois native demonstrated strong offensive ability during the 2016 Calder Cup playoffs with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Toronto Marlies. In 15 playoffs games, Carrick scored 7 goals and 18 points. In 138 regular season AHL games, the two-time AHL all-star has compiled 19 goals and 75 points.
Carrick was originally drafted by the Washington Capitals 137th overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
Today’s announcement of Carrick’s contract continues a busy week for Maple Leafs GM Lou Lamoriello. On Thursday, the Maple Leafs agreed to terms on a three-year entry-level contract with Auston Matthews. On Friday, the Maple Leafs placed forward Peter Holland on waivers. Holland is set for arbitration on July 25.
