Milestone Monday: More Than Jagr and Kane

This week’s look through the best NHL milestones and stats features much more than Kane’s streak and Jagr’s record goal.

Kane Carries On

With an assist in the first period of Sunday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks, Patrick Kane kept his point streak alive at 26 straight games.

The streak is now at a Blackhawks franchise-record 26 games. His streak now has him passing Sidney Crosby’s 25-game streak in 2010 for the longest in recent history. His is the longest streak since Mats Sundin put up a 30-game streak in the 1992-93 season.

He’s just two games from being in the top 10 longest streaks of all-time.

Elias Sports Bureau also noted that Kane is the first player on a defending Stanley Cup Champion to post a streak of at least 26 games since the 1985-86 season when Wayne Gretzky scored in 39 straight games and Paul Coffey scored in 28 straight games.

Impressive random fact about Kane’s point streak? Frank Seravalli notes that since Kane’s streak started on October 17, 21 teams in the league have been shutout at least once. That means Kane’s streak is longer than 21 teams’ current point streaks.

4th All-Time

Jaromir Jagr scored goal number 731 of his career on Thursday, tying Marcel Dionne for fourth all-time. On his next goal he’ll take fourth place to himself and it will bring him within nine goals of tying Brett Hull for third all-time.

Just imagine if he didn’t go play in Russia for three years in the middle of his career. He’d be nearing the top of the list in goals (4th), points (4th) and games played (10th).

Faulk in Power Plays

Carolina defenseman Justin Faulk has already put up 12 goals this season, all of which have come on the power play. He leads the NHL in power play goals and with a power play goal on Saturday against the Arizona Coyotes, he tied a franchise record for defensemen in a single season. He did it in just 30 games.

He ties Risto Siltanen, who scored 12 power play goals over the course of 75 games in the 1983-84 season for the Hartford Whalers. The closest Siltanen came to hitting that number again was posting eight power play goals in three of the five seasons that would follow.

Faulk is also the first player to have 11 straight power play goals in a season since 2008-09, when Teemu Selanne did it.

D-lightful

21-year-old defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen put up a hat trick on Thursday, scoring three goals in a single period.

Ristolainen became the first Sabres defenseman to score a hat trick since Phil Housley in January 1988. He also became the first ever Sabres defenseman to score three goals in a single period.

He is additionally the youngest defenseman to post a hat trick for any team since Hannu Virta scored a hat trick for Buffalo in March 1983.

Saddledome-stic Bliss

The Calgary Flames have now won nine straight home games, dating back to a November 5 game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

That puts the team just one win from tying a franchise record set in 2006 of 10 consecutive home wins.

The night they can tie the record? Their final game before the holiday break. December 22 against the Winnipeg Jets.

A Hurricane of Goals

The Carolina Hurricanes have recorded five goals in each of their last four games. It’s the first time the franchise has recorded at least five goals in four straight games since March 1987 as the Hartford Whalers.

More NHL Milestones From Chicago

With a game-winning goal this week, Jonathan Toews has his third game-winner of the season and the 46th of his career. That ties him with Denis Savard for fourth all-time in franchise history.

Dr. Drai

After a four-point game against the New York Rangers on Friday, Leon Draisaitl has posted 26 points in 20 games for the Oilers. He’s the first Oiler to post 26 or more points in their first 20 games of a season since the 1989-90 season when Mark Messier had 31 points and Jari Kurri had 26.

A Lot of Shots, Period

On Saturday, the Montreal Canadiens fired 27 shots at the Ottawa Senators during the first period alone. That ties a Habs franchise record for most shots in a period. They have previously hit that mark on January 20, 1973 against the Philadelphia Flyers and on February 5, 1977 against the Los Angeles Kings, according to Elias.

The Habs are the first team since the Detroit Red Wings on Mar. 12, 2009 to take that many shots in a period.

On the flip side of that coin, 27 shots against was a franchise record for the Senators. Despite some ugly years, they’ve never allowed that many shots in a single period.

Bergeron Climbs

Boston’s Patrice Bergeron scored point number 576 this week, climbing into sole possession of 11th place in franchise history.

He move past Bruins legend and Hall of Famer Milt Schmidt.

Milestone Games

This week Marian Hossa (1,200 games), Alain Vigneault (1,000 games), Radim Vrbata (900 games) and Niklas Hjalmarsson (500 games) all hit games played/coached milestones.

Hossa, Vrbata and Hjalmarsson all hit their milestones in the same game on Sunday.

Bad Milestone

Steven Stamkos certainly doesn’t “like” what’s happening right now. His eight-game goal drought is his longest since December 2009.

A solid volume shooter, he’s only taken six shots in his last five games. So he’s not doing a whole lot to end this streak.
