The St. Louis Blues suffered their first significant injury of the 2015-16 season when they announced on Thursday that center Patrik Berglund has re-injured his shoulder while training for the coming season.
Berglund will undergo surgery on Friday and is expected to be re-evaluated in about four months, which puts an optimistic return at late December. The team noted in the announcement that Berglund’s initial shoulder injury was a dislocation suffered during the 2013-14 season.
Berglund’s injury may have played into the team’s decision to give veteran forward Scott Gomez a camp tryout, which was announced on Thursday as well.
The injury to both Berglund and Jori Lehtera, who is nursing an ankle injury and expected to miss camp, opens the door for Gomez to earn a contract or for some of the Blues’ younger players, like Robby Fabbri, to earn their first taste of NHL action.
Berglund scored 12 goals and 15 assists through 77 games last season and has played a career total of 513 games, all in a sweater bearing the note.
