On Saturday, the Toronto Maple Leafs waived Petter Granberg and the Detroit Red Wings waived Landon Ferraro, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Granberg, a 23-year-old defenseman, has been injured the entire season, as well as during training camp, and has not yet played. The Maple Leafs waiving him is an effort to send the prospect, who has eight career NHL games under his belt, to the American League to play for the Toronto Marlies.
Ferraro, on the other hand, is a 24-year-old rookie who has been with the Red Wings since training camp, playing 10 NHL games, the most he’s ever played in a season. He previously grabbed a total of seven games split across two seasons.
Ferraro is still in search of his first point on the season. He’s a 6-foot, 174-pound agitator, if there is such a designation. He’s not an agitator in the mold of a guy like Matt Cooke, but he has some skill and has the ability to get under the skin of the opposition.
The Red Wings have waived him with the intention of assigning the 2nd round pick from 2009 (32nd overall) to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL if he clears. He scored 27 goals and 15 assists through 70 games for the Griffins last year.
Like with Granberg, Ferraro (knee) has been injured, but is close to being cleared to play. With the Wings roster full, something had to give and the team is choosing to send him back to the AHL.
While Granberg seems unlikely to be claimed, Ferraro has some potential and could be an interesting piece for a team who already views themselves outside the playoff bubble, but is looking to develop a depth piece with offensive upside.
