Kessel’s Grandma Sips Bubbly from the Cup: Video

For each NHL player who has the opportunity to win the Stanley Cup, spending their day (or two) with the Cup is arguably just as meaningful as hoisting the 34 1/2-pound trophy overhead while on the ice with teammates. For Pittsburgh Penguins forward Phil Kessel, he can add a particularly meaningful moment to the list of things he did with the Stanley Cup.

This past weekend, Phil Kessel’s grandma got to sip champagne from hockey’s most cherished prize!


The video was posted to the Instagram account of Kessel’s aunt and is another unique story to add to the celebrations in the Cup’s history!

Before his two days with the Cup, Kessel made headlines when he announced he intended to take it back to Toronto. Toronto, of course, is home to the Maple Leafs–a team Kessel spent six seasons with before being traded to the Penguins on July 1, 2015.

After taking the Cup to his hometown of Madison, Wisconsin, Kessel kept his word and brought the trophy back to Toronto. In a truly classy move by the former-Maple Leaf, Kessel visited the SickKids Hospital and spent time with the young patients and their families, allowing each of them to get up close with the Cup.
