The trade for him has been an oft-criticized move by Philadelphia fans, and they’re going to get some assistance in labeling that a bad move.
Philadelphia Flyers forward R.J. Umberger expects the team to buy him out over the summer, reports Dave Isaac of the Courier Post.
“I expect [a buyout],” Umberger said. “Who wouldn’t after my season? That’s something up to them, their decision. Business side of it, you can’t control that.”
Umberger saw very limited ice time this season. He posted two goals and nine assists in 39 games for the Flyers, and wasn’t ever placed in the lineup during the team’s brief postseason appearance. When he was in the lineup, he averaged a career-low ice time of 10:10.
The soon-to-be 34-year-old has one year left on his deal where he is slated to make $4.5 million in actual salary.
The buyout would cost the team $1.5 million, with a $1.6 million cap hit.
